This state-of-the-art Robotic Surgery program requires extensive experience and knowledge and Dr. Wadhawan and his team can very commendably handle the highly Da Vinci® surgical system. It is minimally invasive, the accuracy level that comes with Robotic Technology is perfect for delicate and complex procedures performed around the Chest and Abdomen. The procedures performed include procedures for Hiatal Hernias, Associated Oesophageal Reflux, Achalasia (an ailment of the muscle located at the end of the Oesophagus), and some conditions that need Removal of Gallbladder.

Talking more specifically about the Laparoscopic approaches of the Bariatric Procedures, these come with a host of benefits, owing to which, both the surgeons and the patients are more inclined towards the implementation of these highly focused procedures. Another area in which is considered utmost proficient, is Metabolic Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes. This form of surgery refers to the wide range of Laparoscopic surgeries in which sections of Small Intestine and Stomach are either bypassed or reduced, which in the long run helps in the cure of Type 2 Diabetes.

In the 90 percent of the patients having Type 2 Diabetes, most of the cases are connected to Obesity. There are countless patients, who fail to bring the Blood Sugar level under control, with the help of appropriate treatment methodologies. Owing to this, such patients have to suffer from organ damage and other serious health conditions that badly affect the organs such as Heart, Eye, Liver, Kidney or the feet. A major cause behind this is serious weight issues. As a very innovative treatment technique, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan has been performing the customized Laparoscopic Metabolic surgeries for many years now. He is one of those surgeons, who paved the way for this form of surgery in India.

There are a few criteria based on which he chooses the right surgery for his patients suffering from Type 2 Diabetes:

  • Detailed evaluation of the patient’s health
  • Medical history, which includes how long the patients has been suffering from Diabetes
  • Treatment being taken or tried for Diabetes that include oral medication or Insulin
  • Weight of the patient before surgery

It has been observed that after a Metabolic Surgery, there is a dramatic enhancement in the levels of Blood Glucose, which has resulted in complete cure of Type 2 Diabetes for most of the patients, who have undergone these surgeries. The positive outcome proves that there are assured metabolic benefits, related to stimulation of specific hormones such as PYY, GLP1, that are incretins and lead to a major boost in the levels of Insulin. Further, it lowers the Insulin resistance thus leading to controlled Blood Sugar in Type II Diabetes. Even before achieving the desired weight loss, these surgeries bring a rapid and sustained enhancement in blood glucose levels, within days of undergoing the surgery.

Dr. Randeep Wadhawan strongly favours the below-mentioned Bariatric procedures because of the maximum surgical advantages and minimum discomfort caused to the patients :

Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric BandingLaparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LABG) : LAGB is a kind of weight-loss or Bariatric procedure. Done with a Laparoscopic approach, there are small incisions involved in this surgery. The incisions are made in the Upper Abdomen, then an adjustable band is put around the upper part of the Stomach. This way a small Stomach pouch is formed and because of the small pouch, the patients feel full sooner that is small pouch means lesser quantity of food. Thus, the patient’s weight is maintained. The band can be adjusted by addition of or removal of fluid in a balloon, which is located around the band. This process is done via a port that is positioned under the skin of the Abdomen and is connected to the band with the help of a tube. Dr. Randeep recommends this surgery for patients with severe Obesity and have tried other forms of the weight loss methods without any success.

Laparoscopic Sleeve GastrectomyLaparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: Also referred to as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy or Gastric Sleeve Procedure, this procedure boosts the process of weight loss majorly. This surgery is done by removing the outer section of Stomach (almost 90 percent); thus, the overall size of the Stomach is reduced, bringing it to the size and shape of a Banana. This ultimately keeps the amount of food intake restricted. There is no need for removal or bypassing the Intestines.

Laparoscopic Gastric BypassLaparoscopic Gastric Bypass:In this, first step is to reduce the size of the Stomach by dividing it with Gastric Staples. This way, a pouch is created at the upper section of the Stomach. In the next step, the Small Intestine is divided into two parts – the Roux Limb and the Biliopancreatic Limb. Then the Roux limb is joined to the newly created pouch, so that this pouch can empty food contents into the bowel. This results into a changed Digestive Tract, which the lower section of the Stomach and a part of the Small Intestine, are bypassed. Being a minimally invasive surgery, there is faster recovery and less pain involved.

Laparoscopic Mini Gastric BypassLaparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass: Being a very updated Bariatric surgeon, Dr. Randeep Wadhawan makes sure that he adopts all kinds of latest surgeries or surgical approaches in this field. Laparoscopic Mini Gastric Bypass is a very advanced type of weight loss procedure and Dr. Wadhawan is an expert in this. This relatively new procedure provides excellent results and thus is being practiced all over. In this procedure, the stomach is divided with the help of Laparoscopic Stapler. Maximum of the stomach is no longer connected to the Oesophagus and won’t be receiving any food. The newly formed Stomach looks like a tube and is much smaller. Around, 2-7 feet of Intestines are bypassed, and the remaining Intestines are connected to the new Stomach.

Revision Bariatric ProceduresRevision Bariatric Procedures : Despite the availability of this wide range of Bariatric surgeries, there are cases where patients haven’t attained the desired weight loss results. This can happen if the patients haven’t totally adhered to the post-surgery instructions or due to any complications post the previous surgery. For such patients, a Revision Bariatric or Revisional Surgery is recommended. A Revision Bariatric Surgery can be a big source of hope for patients, and provide the patients, a second opportunity to lose weight.
