Following is an excerpt from an exclusive interview with the leading obesity surgeon in India, Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala:
What’s the Current Condition of Eman?
Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala stated that despite being bedridden for 25 years, Eman keeps smiling all the time. She is a strong woman. Her condition was very much worse when I met her in Egypt last month. Now she has lost around 22kgs. Now her creatinine level has come down from 3.67 to 1.9. Our goal is to bring it down further to the normal level of 1.2. In general, the potassium levels over 5 are considered as life threatening and in Eman’s case it was 6.7. Even by touching her arm, I can sense that now her condition is improving, since her skin was thicker before and now it is soft.

How do you Communicate with Her?
Owing to a stroke she had suffered at the young age of 11, her speech has become slurred. She doesn’t talk too much and it is her sister who has a basic grasp of English who translates for me. We will be soon starting the speech therapy so that she can tell the story in her own words. Even, I am learning Arabic, too.
Egyptian Doctors have Claimed that you Brought Eman to India for Sake of Publicity.
Yes, people have been making such allegations. But the claim to bring a patient weighing 500kgs from Egypt to Mumbai just for personal benefits is farfetched. This was indeed a challenging task and no one helped Eman. Her sister approached me around six months ago telling me about her case.
Being a doctor, I couldn’t turn down the request. If I had wanted publicity, I would have informed the media the very first day, her sister sought help from me. But the fact is that the world came to know about her only when Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj helped me with the medical visa.
I have already operated many famous personalities including politicians and celebrities. So, I am not fame hungry. I receive hundreds of messages every day from people in Egypt, saying they are praying for Eman.
Was there any Tussle Between India and Egypt over the Case? Are you Satisfied with the help you’ve Received?
Being a unique case, two foreign governments came together to rescue a patient. Everyone from the Governor, Consul General of Egypt to the police, airport officials, and air cargo services has supported us wholeheartedly.
Are there other such Patients Approaching you now?
I received requests from patients of Russia, Switzerland, Saudi and the UAE who got their surgeries from the US and the UK and not satisfied with the results.
