Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that deals with the studies of the digestive system and its disorders. These disorders may affect the small intestine, stomach, oesophagus, rectum, large intestine or colon, liver, pancreas or gallbladder. It is a subspecialty of internal medicine and encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the digestive tract and liver. It also comprises of a wide range of problems such as heartburn, abdominal pain, swallowing disorders, weight loss, ulcers, colitis, jaundice, diarrhea, colon polyps, constipation, cancer of the digestive tract and bleeding.
